 What is a Parrothead?

Simply put, Parrot Heads are fans of singer–songwriter Jimmy Buffett’s tropically influenced beach/rock/folk music. They know the words to all of his songs and the punch lines to all of his jokes. When Jimmy and the Coral Reefer Band come to town, parking lots are turned into beaches and cars become tiki bars. The yearly concert tour is a rite of summer passage for Parrot Heads that combines the best of Mardi Gras, Carnival, the Fourth of July, and a beach party.

Being a Parrot Head is also much more. For most Parrot Heads, there is a specific state of mind that comes with their condition. Age has nothing to do with it. Through his music and writings, Parrot Heads vicariously experience Jimmy’s lifestyle: the party, the ocean, the sunshine, and a relaxed sense of freedom are a part of it. And that freedom is most appealing, it allows us to express our feelings and creativity in whatever manner we choose and allows us to escape from the rat race to our own little tropical paradise, if only for a little while.
Parrot Heads are everywhere; you probably know a few and don’t even realize it. Parrot Heads are doctors, sales reps, lawyers, pilots, police officers, college students, computer programmers, grandparents, and maybe even your neighbor. And through their common interest in Jimmy Buffett’s music, this incredible gumbo of people from all walks of life is able to join together to support community causes in Buffett’s name.

 How I Became a Parrothead
I grew up in the 70's listening to bands like KISS, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, and AC/DC.  You get the picture.  Then sometime
in the 80's I joined one of them record club deals just about the time CD's were coming into their own.  Well I forgot to Off to see the Lizard!mail in my selection of the month card and lo and behold, the postman delivered a CD called "Songs you know by Heart" by Jimmy Buffett.  Now if you check out the rest of my site, you'll see that I love all music, but I lean towards the hard stuff.
So when that Cd came in the mail, I can honestly say that I had never heard any of his music.  While I was checking out the song listing, I noticed the song Margaritaville and I thought,  well hey I think I've heard that song.  I decided to keep it and popped it into the CD player, and I can tell you, I had never heard anything like it.  I fell in love with his music after one listen.  I spent the rest of that night listening to that CD, and by 10 that evening I knew all the words to the songs.
The next day after work I went to the record store and bought every single Jimmy Buffett album I could find, If I remember correctly they only had 4.  The first one I popped into the player when I got home was "Volcano".  I was blown away.  On my next day off I traveled to the big city to go to a real record store and completed my collection of Buffett albums, the older ones I had to buy on cassette because his entire catalog wasn't available on CD yet.

Lest you think I'm some old fogey who's living in the past, some of my new favorite bands are The Donnas, The All American Rejects, and Good Charlotte.  Jimmy's music crosses all boundaries and being a parrothead is like having an extended family.  His music and lyrics have had a huge impact on my life.  Just recently my wife and I had a wedding reception with a tropical, Buffett theme and everyone was required to wear Hawaiian shirts and it was great, before the actual dance started we had Jimmy playing in the background for hours.  If you delve further into these pages you'll find that Jimmy is much more than a musician.  He's a pilot, a best selling author, a sailor, and restaranteur, to name just a few.  Not bad for a guy who learned guitar so he could pick up chicks.

Why?
Why another Jimmy Buffett Page in an internet world filled with a zillion pages of Jimmy Buffett material??
For starters not everyone is familiar with his music.  For example:  When I moved to Canada to be with my girlfriend(now my wife), she was a singer in a local band and they even covered "Margaritaville" in their set.  She's a music lover as I am, with an exquisite voice.  Anyways this was the only Buffett she was familiar with and she didn't know he was still putting out albums and touring every summer,  I think her response was, "Isn't he dead?".  This from a person who is very knowledgable about all forms of music.  I was of course Shocked!  I proceeded to educate her about Jimmy and am proud to say that another parrothead has entered the fold.
Unfortunately this is not uncommon, the average Joe only knows him as that Margaritaville guy, and doesn't realize that
Jimmy has over 30 albums under his belt and is showing no signs of slowing down.  As a matter of fact he has just recently scored his first number 1 hit after 33 years in the business.  His duet with Alan Jackson called "It's Five O'clock Somewhere", hit #1 on July 31, 2003 on billboards country charts and as of Oct. 11, 2003 is #29 on the billboard pop music charts.  Margaritaville reached #8 back in 1977.
So If I can turn just one person on to Jimmy's music then I feel like I can go to sleep at nights easier knowing I have helped
some lost soul  on the path of parrothead madness.  So browse around and learn a little more and slip back into Island time and enjoy!  For you parrotheads if you click on the parrothead island logo, you can check out some of my specially designed parrothead stuff that I am extremely proud of.  Now by clicking on one of the buttons below you'll be transported to a place where you can learn more about our ringleader.
