I'm a big fan of movies, especially really bad ones. My Faves are horror(zombie) movies, sci fi, etc. Sounds pretty geeky I know. On this page I will give you the low down on cool, bad, interesting or whatever movies grab my attention. Click here for my list of the ten best horror flicks ever made.

The Osbournes
Ok I know it's not a movie. The first season of The Osbournes just came out on DVD and if you live in America you're probably thankful because you don't have to keep hearing those annoying bleeps as this modern day family cusses up a
storm. Finally you can watch this exquisite show uncensored, although if you lived in Canada as I do, you would see that Canada is a little bit more the land of the free than the good ole USA as I've already seen it uncensored on Canadian TV. Lest you Americans be offended, I am an American living in Canada and your American government is totally screwing you. I have more freedom here than I ever thought was possible in the States, but I digress. I've been an Ozzy fan since his 1st solo album, "Blizzard of Ozz", and his music rocks. But guess what? He's also a lovable human being. This DVD is priceless just to see Ozzy's confusion as he tries to work the remote for the TV, or whenever anything goes wrong he screams, "Sharon!". Showing us that Ozzy is more than just a crazy rock star who has bitten the heads off of a few doves. There are many extras on the discs such as outtakes, games and unaired footage. I think we payed $22 bucks Canadian, which also made it a hell of a deal. Reality TV at it's best which has given me a newfound respect for the Ozz. Rock On!Strange Horizons
I had the pleasure of watching this flick the other night on TV. It's a British flick about
? I don't know , I never could figure it out. Some people regard " Plan 9 From Outer Space" as the worst film ever made. This film beat it hands down. This is my pick as the absolutely worst movie ever to be shown any where at any time. If you ever get the chance to see it, You will agree. a real stinker. On second thought, don't bother. Synopsis
Fellowship of the Ring
Film by Peter Jackson. If you haven't seen it then you must have been stranded on a deserted island somewhere. Anyhow I will put my 2 cents worth in now. Tolkien Fans Rejoice! Having read the trilogy many times, I was ecstatic to hear that finally a decent Lord of the Rings movie was being made. Most of us Tolkien fans were a bit jittery about how our favorite novel would be translated to the big screen. Especially after the disappointing Bakshi animation flops.
This movie is truly amazing, even if you've never heard of Tolkien. Almost everything I pictured as I read the books is exactly the same on the big screen, the scene where Gandalf fights the Balrog brings chills down my spine. I won't go into storyline here, most everyone knows it. The acting was superb, musical score gave me goosebumps, and Ian McKellan was magnificent as Gandalf. A few hardcore Tolkien fans pooh-pooed the film saying it wasn't true to the book. I say sour grapes to them. Eagerly awaiting The Two Towers and will buy my ticket in advance. A true modern masterpiece.
This
movie
just came out on video at the end of July. Based on the game created by capcom. If you like zombie flicks this movie rocks. Milla Jovovich stars as Alice, and she is hot and can kick major zombie booty. I watched it twice in a row. It may possibly enter my list of all time favorites. It's not great by artistic standards but for pure zombie fun, it can't be beat. Watch out for those" Lickers ".
Evil Dead
Well this is the one, the all time
best horror flick
out there. It doesn't have the best story, special effects, actors, or
other details that critics like to assault, BUT this movie is very enjoyable, an absolute hoot to watch. Bruce Campbell is awesome as Ash, our beleaguered hero of this tale of, well, evil dead things. Alice Cooper described this movie as the best spam in a cabin movie ever made (see pic). The things that happen to these folks will make you squirm and also tickle your funny bone. We used to have parties with this film and its sequel Evil Dead 2 as the backdrop. Everyone I have watched this movie with has loved it. It is #1 on my list of horror flicks. The sequel is as good as the original and is even campier. Don't miss this oneGroundhog Day
Not a Horror flick. Bill Murray in one of his best performances of his career. Phil the weatherman has to relive Feb. 2 over and over again. It is hilarious, and also a little romantic if you like that kinda thing. Also stars Andie McDowell and Chris Elliott. Watch as Bill goes from an obnoxious weatherman to someone who finally figures it out. Very good job by Bill and shame on the academy for not recognizing his talent. The scene with Bill and the groundhog "Punxsawtawney Phil", driving the truck is priceless. Many critics loved this movie and for once I agree with them. Bill Murray at his best.
Return to Me
I've always been a David Duchovny fan and I never saw any trailers or ads for this movie. I was standing in the video store
one night having rented everything in the place, and for some reason this movie caught my eye. I'll never know why. For whatever reason it did, I will always be grateful. If, like me, you've longed for a movie that the whole family could watch comfortably, yet is not baby-ish, or Disney, or some such crap ... well, this is the movie for you. Heartwarming, awesome cast (Carrol O'Connor, Minnie Driver, the infamous David Duchovny, Bonnie Hunt, Robert Loggia & Jim Belushi), just to name a few. Not to mention an awesome soundtrack.
I don't want to give the plot away, but suffice it to say that we have some laughs, some tears, and the kind of love story that the jockiest of jocks will still enjoy. The ending is a surprise, what you expect to happen doesn't.
What an
awesome movie
, written and produced by Bonnie Hunt, an awesome talent that we should hope and pray to see more of in the not too distant future. Enjoy! I highly recommend!
Enemy of the State
This movie came out years ago in the 90's and it stars Will Smith and Gene Hackman. With supporting roles from Jason Lee,
Seth Green, Jack Black, and Jon Voight to name a few. I just watched it again the other night and I had forgotten how good it was. It's one of those edge of your seat type deals. And if you've read anything on my information or freedoms page, then it's also scary because of issues I've brought up there. The technology to keep all of us humans under surveillance is out there and we really don't know how it's being used. Which this movie brings our attention to. I guarantee that after you watch this flick for the first time you'll want to rewind the tape and watch it over again.
Will Smith ends up with a tape which was passed to him from an old college buddy which the NSA wants to desperately get its hands on. It has twists and turns, action, suspense, humor and the government agencies keeping a close watch on us using satellites, bugs, and such. When you think that a satellite has the power to read the headlines of a newspaper that we hold in our hands from outer space then you can see our dilemma. But I digress, I think this film is overlooked alot as one of Will Smith's and Gene Hackman's best performances. How could you not like anything Gene Hackman is in.
Moulin Rouge
Uh oh, I think I heard a few of you groan miserably at the mention of
a musical
. Wait though, and listen to this. I hate
musicals. At the mere thought of watching this movie, I got the heebie jeebies. Even though I love all kinds of music, passionately. Even the prospect of a scantily clad Nicole Kidman didn't do anything for me. I hate musicals that much. C,mon guys, we all know Nicole is hot, even you girls out there have to admit that she's a beauty. I say all this to lay some background, and that my label of 4 stars is not easily given out. Especially to a (gasp) musical. This movie is a double whammy for guys, a musical and a weepy love story. I imagine a lot of he-men boyfriends being dragged screaming and kicking to this movie by their extremely adamant girls, and then walking out afterwords thinking "hmmm that wasn't half bad." (Although probably not admitting it). I really enjoyed this movie for different reasons. First of all, it's a little strange, and strange is always good. The music is contemporary stuff, done a different way than you'd normally hear it. And ,oh of course, Nicole Kidman is stunning (drool) and has a beautiful voice. Story is boy meets girl, loses girl, gets girl back, and girl dies. I like the way this movie was done, and after watching it a second time enjoyed it even more. The DVD has lots of extras on it, you could spend a whole weekend watching everything on it. Don't be afraid guys, check this one out with your girl. I promise you'll make it through, and you'll go ,Wow when it's over.
Dreamcatcher
First of all I almost gave this one 4 stars and I may change my mind still. I saw
this movie
2 days before it opened at a special screening that I won tickets to. For those of you living in a cave, this movie is based on a Stephen King book (one of my favorite authors, of course). As a rule his books have never translated well to the big screen in my opinion. His characters
are so rich and they always seem to lose something, making a great book into a mediocre B movie. King fans know what I'm talking about. When I read this book I thought it was good, but certainly not his best. Was I ever in for a surprise! This movie kicked ass. It had me jumping out of my skin in a few places, and I knew what was coming. I highly recommend that you go see this movie while it is still in theaters. Don't wait for the video to come out. This is a classic aliens arrive on earth to take over movie, that will have you squirming. Especially the shit weasels, talk about wicked. Starring Morgan Freeman, and Jason Lee (mallrats, Dogma) and a few that are newcomers. I think this movie has done Stephen King justice, and along with the suspense there is a good mix of some really funny lines that are laugh out loud funny. Even some good fart humor. As i sat and watched this movie the people around were jumping, laughing and a few were sitting on the edge of their seats. Filmed in British Columbia, there are some really beautiful shots of the forests. Certainly the scene stealers were the shit weasels as they're called. Definitely grotesque individuals.
This movie has hung around in my brain for a few days and I felt I had to write something here about it. I do think that this movie will lose a lot of its impact once it arrives on DVD and video, I'm glad I saw it at the theater and would really like to go see it again. Trust me you won't regret it.
28 Days Later
When this movie came out, the trailers for it proclaimed "It's scary as hell!", and they're right. Not only is it scary, it's
intelligent, suspenseful and just downright good. Almost a zombie type movie, but these critters are infected with a violent virus that some animal rights activists manage to unleash upon the world. So this dude wkaes up in the hospital 28 Days after the first outbreak, hence the title. The movie is set in London and as our hero walks through the hospital and out into the streets it's just downright eerie. No sound whatsoever. I don't want to give to much away, but horror fans and critics alike thought this movie rocked. If you're looking for something to watch on Halloween this year, you can't lose with this film. Make sure you
watch it
with your favorite honey because she'll be jumping in your lap before this ones over. 1. The Exorcist
When I saw this movie for the first time I was a teenager (in the 70's) and let me tell you, it scared the bejesus out of me. This movie has it all, demons, crucifixes , projectile vomiting, Head spinning, all done by a posessed 12 yr old girl. Very creepy and a true
classic
, it still gives me the creeps to this day. the scene with the crucifex is extremely disturbing. Those who have seen it know what I'm talking about. Very controversial movie when it came out. Still packs a punch all these years later. The new version with extra footage(7 minutes worth) is better, especially the scene of young Regan spiderwalking down the stairs. Great googly moogly. The DVD is great but William Friedkin's commentary of the film is lame.2. Halloween
I saw this in the theater when it came out and I remember standing outside the doors waiting for the 5 o'clock
screening to end so me and my date could enter and see the next showing. And the people inside were screaming their bloody heads off. I was sure that I was going to get some "close time" with my gal at this flick. The best boogeyman flick ever made. Michael Myers scared the crap out of me and my date and needless to say we did not go parking after this movie. We were too damn scared. The theme music (written by John Carpenter) alone was creepy enough to give you the heebie-jeebies. A cinematic
classic
that only gets better with age, and if you're going to watch this one you might as well pick up Halloween 2 as it's just as good and continues from the second the first one ends. Skip number 3 as it's probably one of the worst flicks ever made. Skip all of them until Halloween H2o, it's pretty good too.3. House of 1000 Corpses
This
movie
kicks ass. Two couples traveling the back roads of America stumble across Captain Spauldings Murder ride in a small town and they go in search of the legend of Dr. Satan. Unfortunately they run into Otis, Baby, Mother Firefly, Tiny and Grampa. What ensues next is just pure carnage. There is no middle ground for this film, you will either love it or absolutely hate it. Reminiscent of such 70's horror fare like the Texas Chainsaw massacre and others of the genre. Rob Zombie wrote and directed this film and also contributes to the soundtrack. Mr. Zombie is a devoted horror movie buff, especially early stuff, and it shows. There are many moments that are shocking and quite a few which are just plain disgusting. I couldn't think of a better movie to watch on a dark Halloween night. The ending is quite wide open for interpretation, but I'm pretty sure Rob has a sequel in the works and I can't wait.4.Evil Dead (1,2 & 3)
I had to count all 3 movies here as one. Regardless of which one you see they have basically the same theme,
"I'll swallow your soul" and stuff. I covered Evil Dead earlier on this page so I'll touch on 2 and 3 here. Roger Ebert gave
Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn a 3 star rating in his Chicago Sun-Times review, he loved it. You have to se it if for nothing more than when Ash's hand becomes possessed and he attacks himself and finally ends up cutting his hand off with a chainsaw.
Part 3 or Army of Darkness is the weakest one of the three, in this one Ash utters some of his best one liners such as the sound clip to the left of this paragraph. This one is definitely the campiest of the three. Guaranteed to creep you out and make you laugh these 3 movies are classics.
5.Dawn of the Dead
This movie is awesome. The living dead are taking over and martial law has been declared. Sequel to the original Night
of the Living Dead. Take 4 people on the run, 2 of which are military guys gone awol. They take off in a helicopter looking for someplace where the dead won't eat your intestines and brains and stuff, and they find a deserted mall infested with zombies. They land on the roof and decide they need some supplies. After atrip thru the mall fighting off zombies they decide that maybe they can block off the entrances and use the place as a fortress of sorts, with everything they need within shoplifting distance. That's all I'm gonna tell you. If nothing else watch this one for the scenes of good ole boys going zombie hunting, (Damn, I missed, s'allright Jed I got him) and the hare krishna zombie is a hoot. Very graphic with zombies eating guts and legs and stuff. My girl even liked this one.6.Return of the Living Dead
Do you see a theme here? I'm kinda partial to zombie movies and I have seen this one at least a hundred times. This
movie is no way associated with George Romero's living dead trilogy. As a matter of fact, I think there were some lawsuits centered around this movie. This zombie movie differs from the ones you're used to as in these critters can run. They also prefer brains as the meal of choice. All the time chasing people and hollerin' BRAINS, BRAINS, BRAINS. Humor abounds, as does grisly brain eating scenes. We have midget zombies and smart zombies. One even gets on some eaten cops' radio and advises dispatch to "Send More Cops!". Favorite line in the movie is "I hit the fucking brain. Well it worked in
the movie
." Great soundtrack too. Featuring The Cramps doing "Surfin' Dead". Absolutely Great. I've seen this one over a hundred times and it never fails to give me a chuckle. We need more movies like this one.7. Hellraiser
Clive Barker is a freak. If you've ever read any of his stuff, you already know his stories are quite disturbing. So here he takes a turn at the big screen and in a big way. Pinhead is one of the all time great boogeyman. A very twisted tale involving a mysterious puzzle cube which when solved correctly, opens a portal to hell and twisted demons pour forth to tear your soul apart. My only complaint is it moves kind of slow at the beginning. Keep the lights on though. If maggots bother you then stay away.8. I Spit on Your Grave
You'll probably never be able to find this movie unless your local video store has an awesome horror section. The cult classic features the story of a strong and violent rape of a young woman writer in the woods by four country boys out for a good time followed by her triumphant revenge over them. Strong character portrayals leave nothing to the imagination and brutally close camera work contribute to the cult feature's gruesome reputation. This frequently banned film is EXTREMELY violent and gory. For drive-in, exploitation fans only. A lot is made of this film in fandom, and like it or hate it, it should be seen. Some of the rape scenes are pretty realistic and the revenge factor seemed almost silly sometimes. Although, the bathtub revenge scene is pretty disturbing. Still, see it and
decide for yourself
. A definite must see for true horror fans.
9. Dead Alive
I don't know where to start. Movie by Peter Jackson (you know that guy who did Fellowship of the Ring, you might have heard about that one). Take one domineering mother who gets bitten by the dreaded Sumatra Rat Monkey and her
son(who kinda looks like Steve from Blues Clues) who tries to keep the ensuing mess under control. Let's see , she dies comes back to life, (YEY more zombies), a priest who says "I kick ass for the Lord", zombies copulating, having a baby zombie, which leads to the baby in a blender scene. Dripping with state-of-the-art effects that feature mutilations, dismemberments and household appliances, combining into the most bizarre ending I have ever seen. This is the R rated version which had 19 minutes cut out of it. An uncut version of this movie exists until the title of
Braindead
and I am searching for it. Oh did I mention that not only is this the goriest film ever made it is also one of the funniest I have ever seen. Highly recommended. The first Freddy film and holds up well all these years later. Forget about the other Freddy flicks, when he became a caricature of himself. Wes Craven took a pretty cool concept and really got weird with it and when the film came out there was nothing like it. Too bad with all the sequels it became overkill, and many people would pass on this one even if they haven't seen it because "That Krueger is old hat and predictable". For those of you who haven't seen this, the original, then rent this one for a late night. A very young Johnny Depp makes his first movie appearance and eventually gets swallowed by a bed and then blood is copiously spewed forth to signal his demise. As a side note, if you like the musical group The Donnas, this happens to be their favorite movie and they watch it to wind down after a show.
Honorable Mentions
Bloodsucking Freaks
Wow! This
movie
is truly twisted. It's got dwarfs, dismemberments, torture, ballet, plenty of nudity, and brain sucking through a straw. This movie came out in 1975 and was rated x at the time (no it's not porn). Troma films bought the rights to it and released it on video and DVD. Certainly not a film for everyone, it has the potential to be quite disturbing if you take it seriously. I understand quite a few women's groups were truly disgusted with this one. For shock value alone I give this one 3 stars. The story is really quite stupid and basically a loose plot line to show a bunch of horrible and disturbing stuff. Don't expect great stuff, just lots of gore and you won't be disappointed. Friday the 13th
The original one, no Jason Voorhees here (except for a cameo as a little kid at the end). Once again took a date to
see at the theater when it first came out and once again no nookie afterwards. I know it's a slasher flick, but see at the time I lived on a lake and used to go fishin' a lot in my little john boat by myself especially at night. After seeing this one I had to rethink my fishing habits. Forget about all the other Jason films, this one is the best. A very young Kevin Bacon makes his film debut (sadly he doesn't survive)
more to come
